Jumpin' Hot Djembe Beats!
I have been a drummer almost 25 years now. After taking up the drum kit as a teenager I went on to play in various bands: rock bands, brass- and wind-bands, orchestras, folk ensembles... playing everything from soul to heavy metal, swing to hip-hop in pubs, clubs, theatres, shopping malls...
In the early nineties I discovered the magic of more traditional drumming, the power of the drum to touch our cellular memory, to tap our ancient roots.
I became fascinated by the old tribal and shamanic rhythms, the spiritual heart of the drum, the most ancient of instruments (The oldest drums in the world, which are dated from 6000 BC, have been found from the neolithic or 'new stone age' period.
Many magical hours spent drumming with friends, strangers and alone around campfires, in tipis and in wild places, as well as busking all over England and Wales have given me a love for this ancient form of expression.
I now play djembe, a traditional West-African drum with a 3,000- year history and a key role in modern music!
As well as healing through tapping our deep spiritual and biological roots, a good djembe beat is just a damn good way to get any party jumping!
